How to Get to Silfra in Iceland

Silfra is in Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir), on Iceland’s Golden Circle. Most visitors reach it from Reykjavík by car, or by joining a guided tour with transport.

Getting to Silfra by Car From Reykjavík

First, leave Reykjavík heading toward Þingvellir National Park. Next, take Route 36, which is the most common driving route from the capital area. Then, continue on Route 36 until you reach the park area.

After entering Þingvellir, follow the park signs for Silfra, snorkeling, or diving. Signage and access labels can change over time, so the most reliable method is to follow the latest signs on-site.

Most drives from Reykjavík take about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on conditions.

Parking for Silfra

After you reach the Silfra access area, park in the designated parking area used for Silfra snorkeling and diving. Some operators and sources refer to Parking Lot “P5”, but names and signs can change, so use the park’s current signage as the final guide.

Walking to the Water Entry Point

After parking, expect a short walk to the water. The path is about 400 meters and is usually a gravel trail leading to the entry area.

Getting to Silfra Without a Car

If you do not have a rental car, guided tours are the simplest option. Many snorkeling and diving tours offer pickup and drop-off from Reykjavík, which removes the need to drive and find parking.

Public transport to Þingvellir can be limited depending on the season, so it is not always a practical way to reach Silfra.
